Can the children change the world?

10 years ago in the North of Russia, above the Arctic Circle in the town of Kirovsk, the Chairman of FM Environmental Ltd, Mr Eamonn Fitzpatrick established and funded an Environmental Festival for local children. Russians called this festival “We live here” and together we have made it annual event which takes place every year.

Every year children from 3 to 16 years of age, participate in different activities like “Tidy Town” which includes activities such as cleaning parks and spring waters, tourist places in the mountains, sports grounds and play grounds, places around schools and kindergartens.  They make bird feeders, collect and utilize plastic bottles, create environmental posters and many more great environmental ideas. Kirovsk looks much better and clean now thanks to these activities and people are more responsible for the environment.

For the last three years, the municipality of Kirovsk have been sponsored for this festival by FM Environmental Ltd and this year FM provided a special challenge price which is for a  kindergarten school. This school was very much involved in four competitions during the festival in 2015 including making souvenirs from recycled materials.

This is a fantastic tradition which encourages children to participate in environmental activities and the yearly festival, “We live here” inspires young people to create and develop new environmental ideas together with their parents and grandparents.  The winner this year developed a new bird feed which allows birds to fly into out of the snow and up of the ground to feed and stay warm.

We look forward to many more years of creating new and exciting environmentally friendly products, ideas and activities.
