Today I came across an interesting article on the history of the sewage system in London.  The need for a sewage system first came about due to the Great Stink!  The smell was so bad at the time, in particular for members of the parliament that a bill was passed to treat the problem.  Previous to the new sewage system the raw sewage flowed into the Thames.  At the time this was also a source of main drinking water for the area and as a consequence disease such as cholera was a problem.

The new system was designed to divert foul water from older sewers and divert this to the new system.  82 miles of sewers and millions of bricks were used to build the system.  Today the sewage system is still in operation and Thames Valley has over 43,500 miles of sewers.  They estimate that over 55,000 blockages result from wrong items being washed down the sink, FOG waste being one of the problems.

Fatbergs, wet-wipes and general waste being disposed down drains are some of the problems that water companies deal with every year.  If you read our blogs you will know the installation and maintenance of a grease trap will help in the reduction of fats, oils and grease entering the sewage system.  In recent years more emphasis is being placed on businesses to install grease trap to reduce the frequency of FOG build up and fatbergs.
