Fatbergs and Fog waste is a problem which is affecting not just the UK but other countries in the world. News stories on-line highlight that although some businesses and food establishments have installed and maintain their grease trap a lot of work has to be done to promote grease traps.
Restaurants and food establishments are FOG producing i.e. the foods they use will have Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) waste which should not be entering the sewage system. Hotels, schools, nursing homes and businesses are also facilities which produce FOG waste but have not considered installing a grease trap.
We all use fats and oil to cook food with but how much of this is really being disposed correctly? Yes fat is liquid when is hot but when this cools it will solidify into a solid mass. Over time and especially if one area or town is disposing FOG waste down the drains problems will occur.
The most common result is flooding and maintenance work needing done. Southern Water estimates that over 3000 homes each year are flooded due to FOG blockages. This is a very high number and with the below steps we can limit the amount of FOG waste going down the drain:
- Never pour Fat, Oil or Grease down the sink
- Remove excess grease from plates with a paper towel before washing
- Remove any excess food waste from plates, pots and pans before washing
- Use a Fat Jar or container to store used fat and oil
- Use a sink strainer to avoid food waste going down the drain
