FOG WASTE

This week’s blog is all about fatbergs.  Two artists in the Netherlands have plans to create a man-made fatberg on an island as part of a design research project.  The fatberg will be formed from fats that have been rendered to remove any impurities and therefore less likely to smell than sewer fatbergs. Over time the fatberg can block the sewers pipes and even break them, resulting in an expensive repair bill.

The artists plan to create the fatberg on an island using warm fat.  This will be dripped onto the surface of an embryonic island and over time the fat will solidify and increase in size to form a fatberg.  It is expected to be a big hit with the local birds in the area!  The duo has previously held exhibitions to showcase fatbergs as a potential valuable energy source.

Fatbergs are a big problem for local authorities.  One fatberg discovered in London was the size of a bus and last year a 30 metre long fatberg was discovered in Durham when a sewage leak alerted the local authority to a problem.

BIN FOG WASTE THIS CHRISTMAS

Local authorities are already advising customers to avoid pouring FOG waste down sinks and drains.  The Christmas period normally sees an increase in the amount of waste entering the drains and increasing the risk of a problem occurring.

This Christmas keep a fat jar handy to store any excess FOG waste and once cooled dispose the waste correctly.
