Hello Blog Readers!
FOG WASTE
Water authorities were called to remove a fatberg in Bierton, England. The fatberg was detected after residents experienced problems with flushing their toilets. The problem was caused by a blockage of Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) in the sewer. When FOG waste accumulates it will grow into a fatberg which results in flooding, foul smell, expensive maintenance and problems at pumping stations. It is important that both households and businesses restrict FOG waste entering the sewer system.
Households can help to avoid growing a fatberg by not pouring oil down the sink, removing food waste from plates and pots before washing and using a fat trap or jar to store waste oil. It is important to remember that the sewers were not built to handle kitchen waste and food.
Restaurants can install a grease trap or grease interceptor to remove FOG waste from water. A grease trap works by separating FOG waste from waste water and allowing clean water to enter the main waste system. In some cities it is now mandatory to install a grease trap in FOG producing kitchens.
