Hello Blog Readers!
WHAT’S COOKING IN QUEENS
Residents in the Queens area of New York are cooking up a big problem. The area has problems with blockages in the sewer due to large quantities of cooking oil being poured down sinks and drains. Grease waste is responsible for around 60 percent of blockages and back-ups in the New York area.
Millions of pounds are spent each year maintaining sewer lines and reacting to flooding and back-up in the system. Local authorities and outreach programmes have visited over 50,000 residents to encourage them to store used cooking oil in containers as part of a Cease the Grease Campaign. Restaurants have also been encouraged to sell used cooking oil to companies that make bio-diesel.
GREASE TRAPS NEEDED
The Queens area has a high concentration of restaurants that use FOG producing foods. If a grease trap is not installed and maintained it will result in Fats, Oil and Grease waste entering the sewer system. A fatberg will form and result in blockages, back-up and down time in the system. FOG waste will be liquid when it enters the drain system but once this cools it will solidify and form a large mass.
A solution for restaurants is to install and maintain a grease trap to reduce FOG waste entering the drains. Luckily Grease Guardian has a range of grease traps that are suitable for kitchens of all sizes.
The Grease Guardian D and X series traps food waste and fats and removes grease with a highly efficient skimming programme. The Grease Guardian can be connected to pot wash sinks, pre-rinse sinks and combi ovens. These units are compact enough to fit any application and require minimum ongoing maintenance.
