Hello Blog readers!
REDUCE FOG AND FOOD WASTE
Reducing waste and recycling is a concern for food outlets, supermarkets, restaurants and households. Each year 13 billion pounds of food is thrown away. The average household throws out between £470 – £700 worth of food each year!
Supermarket stores have now introduced methods to reduce the amount of food being thrown away. Cafes selling food waste have opened in the UK with food sourced from supermarkets, restaurants and food allotments. A rock it and wrap it scheme is in operation in the USA which collects excess food from concert and venues and is donated to local soup kitchens. The introduction of irregular shaped vegetable in supermarkets in the UK will also have an impact on the volume of food waste being thrown away. Typically odd shaped foods are rejected by stores but lower prices and celebrity chefs have helped create a new demand for these foods.
So what can be done to reduce FOG waste? Restaurants and business can reduce FOG waste by installing a grease trap or grease interceptor. A grease trap is designed to separate Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) waste from waste water allowing clean water to enter the system. Specialist companies can collect and recycle waste FOG into Biodiesel. Biodiesel is used to fuel cars, buses and office building. This is a great way of reusing FOG waste that would otherwise be stored or poured down drains.
