PALM OIL FATBERG FOUND ON DUBLIN BEACH

Fingal County Council has issued a warning for walkers to be on the lookout for palm oil fatbergs after they were spotted in Fingal, Dublin. Walkers have been warned to keep dogs away from the palm fatbergs as they can be dangerous and toxic to pets.  It is thought that the palm oil originated from a ship consignment in the English Channel from around 18 months ago.  Recent storms have helped to wash palm oil to beaches in the UK and Ireland. The fatberg is formed from congealed palm oil and can range from golf ball sized lumps to much larger boulder sized formations. Palm oil is used in products such as margarine, biscuits, popcorn, soaps, cosmetics and even candles.

GREASE TRAP

A grease trap will help reduce fatbergs that are the result from Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) waste being washed down sinks and drains from food establishments. FOG waste will be liquid when poured down sinks and drains but once it cools it will harden into a solid mass.  The blockage can result in flooding, back-ups and foul smells!

A grease trap is designed to intercept grease and solids before they enter the drainage system.  As FOG is lighter than water, it will rise to the top of the tank allowing clear waste water to leave the grease trap.  Many local authorities now require restaurants and FOG producing kitchens to install and maintain a grease trap.  Stop blockages and stay compliant with Grease Guardian grease traps, food strainers, waste coffee traps and grease recovery units.
