Hello Blog Readers!
REMOVAL OF FATBERG
Water authorities have highlighted again the importance of less Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) waste entering the sewers. Â Last year one water authority visited restaurants in the Oxford area and found that over 90 percent of restaurants had inadequate or no grease management system or grease traps installed. Â A build up of FOG waste can result in a fatberg forming.
A Fatberg is a congealed blob of fats and grease that end up in our sewers and mix with other waste items discharged to drain. This is not the first time Thames Water has been tasked with removing a fatberg. One fatberg in Chelsea cost over £400.000 in repairs and two months to repair. A specialist team of flushers help keep the sewers free from blockages and clears around 80,000 blockages a year from its 108,000 km sewer network
GREASE TRAP
Food establishments can help reduce FOG waste by installing and maintaining a grease trap. Everyday restaurants and food outlets allow fats, oils and grease to be discharged into drains during food preparation and wash up. Â A grease trap works by separating FOG waste from water, FOG waste is lighter than water and will rise to the top of the tank.
