BUILD UP OF FOG IN THE SEWER

Water companies regularly carry out CCTV surveys and some very strange objects have been discovered in pipes and sewers. No grease traps have been reported yet! A 600 pound alligator was discovered in Texas, a bicycle, half a mini cooper car and false teeth are some of the items found. Others items that have been discovered are:

• £36,000 worth of gold was found at a water treatment facility – the gold particles originated from instruments used by the industry.

• A sheep was discovered roaming the sewers on a routine survey inspection

• A cow was found under a man hole in China

• Luxury watches worth £60,000 were found in a drain in Essex, UK

• A baby seat was removed from a manhole in the UK

• A fax machine was found in the sewer in Scotland

• Goldfish and dinosaur bones were found in Canada

FATBERGS

The most common object that is found in the sewers is fatbergs. Fatbergs are found in areas with a high concentration of food outlets. Lack of grease traps and waste management have contributed to high volumes of Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) entering the sewers. When FOG waste cools in the sewer it coats the pipes and over time restricts the flow of water and results in blockages, repairs and down time. NI water has spent over £5 million clearing blockages in the past two years.
