One question we face here at Grease Guardian is “What is a grease trap and why do I need one?”

Grease removal units have been around for more than 100 years. The concept is quite simple. Wastewater (usually from commercial kitchens) containing fats, oils and grease (or simply F.O.G.) enters a receptacle. F.O.G. does not mix with water and as F.O.G. is lighter than water it rises to the top. The clear water escapes under an outlet baffle. A traditional grease trap needs to be opened and the F.O.G. pumped out once a month.(a Grease Guardian removes the trapped grease automatically every day).Without the inclusion of a grease interceptor in commercial kitchens the health and safety of the establishment may be compromised. Grease will cause blockages and foul odours if left untreated. It is common for government bodies to fine owners who fail to install some form of grease treatment and consequently create grease problems. Remember, your grease may be causing someone else trouble and it is usually not difficult to trace the source of the problem.

FM believe that the Grease Guardian is the most efficient form of grease treatment on the market as the Grease Guardian is installed at the source of the problem and removes grease on a daily bases. In-ground traps lose efficiency as grease builds up obliging regular cleaning, which can prove costly over time. Enzyme systems are often liable to emulsify grease and pass the problem on to someone else once the grease solidifies again. The Grease Guardian is a modern way of treating an old problem.

There are various ways of treating grease. A static grease system can be installed underground and collects grease over a period of several weeks. The trap then needs to be emptied to maintain efficiency. Automatic Grease Removal Devices (Grease Guardian) perform the task of other grease removal units but also remove the grease daily and provide the highest efficiency if looked after correctly. Enzyme and other chemical treatment do not solve the problem entirely. Enzymes and other chemical treatment systems work by dosing solutions down pipework at regular intervals. These systems do not mechanically remove fats, oils and grease, they break down grease which later reforms causing problems to pumping stations and treatment plants further downstream. It is also costly to top-up enzymes and chemicals.
