Dublin City Council's FOG Management Plan mandated food operators install Grease Guardian units to prevent sewer blockages, leading to over 1500 installations across the city, including at Croke Park and the Guinness Brewery.
In 2008, Dublin City Council (DCC) introduced the Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG) Management Plan to address the growing issues in Dublin’s sewer network and treatment systems. Due to the expanding population and booming hospitality sector, the city's infrastructure had become overwhelmed by FOG-related blockages, leading to increased maintenance costs. The Council mandated that all food operators install approved automatic Grease Removal Units (GRUs), such as the Grease Guardian, to prevent FOG from entering the sewer system.
This initiative was part of a legislative framework under Section 16 of the Local Government (Water Pollution) Acts 1977 & 1990, which required businesses to install, maintain, and regularly service grease management equipment. The goal was to reduce blockages, lower environmental incidents, and cut costs associated with maintaining the sewer network.
Since the program’s inception, over 1500 Grease Guardian units have been installed throughout Dublin, including high-profile locations like Croke Park Stadium, the Guinness Brewery, and the National Gallery.
