Fats, Oil and Grease (FOG) cause major issues in our drainage systems, the reason simply being both animal fats and vegetable oils are hydrophobic (they do not dissolve in water).
When FOG enters the drainage system the problem is multiplied. FOG is washed down sinks and into the drains of restaurants, hotels, schools, homes and kitchens and the problem is worldwide. This problem of drain blockages can be easily prevented through excellent kitchen practices, education of FOG and by having Grease Traps or Automatic Transfer Systems in place at source to prevent drain blockages, financial penalties and environmental issues.
According to British Water 2015, there are 366,000 drain blockages a year and 70% of these are caused by FOG. A grease separator, often called a grease entrapment system or grease trap, takes advantage of the fact that FOG is less dense than water, and so naturally floats on the surface of the water within the separator unit.
